Also congratulations to Paul Sexton who won a bronze medal in the 100m hurdles in the Tailteann Games with an impressive time of 14.9s. And Aine Brady was part of the gold medal winning 4X300m Ulster relay team.

Conall Mooney Ulster Champion copy

The Ulster & NI Track & Field Championships were held over 3 weekends in 3 different venues in June. First up were the Children’s Games & U12-U13 Championships in Donegal on the 13th June and this was hosted by Finn Valley AC at their newly built 400m track and athletics facility.  The U9-U11 age groups are team events and Annalee AC teams had a fantastic day with 9 teams qualifying for the All Irelands. In addition, Conall Mooney won the U9 60m individual event and his first Ulster championship. Odhran O’Reilly was second in both the U10 Boys Long jump and 500m. It took a photo finish to separate first and second in the 500m with Odhran eventually judged second by a mere 1/100th of a second. Dallan McKenna won his first Ulster silver medal in the U11 Turbo javelin. And there were 5 relay team medals. Many of the athletes who competed had pbs with multiple top 5 individual and team results.

U14-U19 & Senior Track & Field Championships (Antrim Forum & Mary Peter Track)

Aine Brady of Annalee AC is a double Ulster Champion having won two Ulster Championship gold medals in the U16 Girl’s category. Aine won the 80m hurdles by 0.3s but dominated the longer 250m Hurdles later in the day and finished a second clear and well ahead of her fellow competitors. Paul Sexton (U17 Boys) and Abbie Sexton (U15 Girls) both won their sprint hurdle events. Abbie won the 60m hurdles race in a time of 12.53s, which was over a second ahead of second place.  Lauren Sexton (U19 Girls) had to hurdle in the teeming rain at the recently refurbished Mary Peters Track in Belfast. Lauren finished in 3rd place overall. Orla Murphy won the U18 Shot putt event with a throw of 9.52.

Aodhagan Watters won his first Senior medal with a senior bronze in the 300m steeplechase along with the gold medal in his own U17 age group race. Aoife Murphy was second in the U19 Girls Triple Jump. Roland Surlis ran 2.05.18s in the U17 Boys 800m, which was good enough for a further silver medal. Paul Sexton finished 4th in the U17 200m. Courtney Rapple McDowell won two Bronze medals in the U17 Girls Discus and in the Javelin.

Annalee AC’s Cian Brady had another outstanding Ulster Championships. Cian was second in the U14 Boys Hurdles in a time of 13.71s. He followed that up with a 3rd place finish in the long jump with 4.50m and just missed out on a medal in the 200m where he finished 4th. Oisin McCorry had a new competition pb of 1.35m in the high jump to finish in 4th place. And Ciaran O’Reilly produced a superb sprint finish in the U14 Boys 1500m. Ciaran finished in 3rd place in the 1500m in a time of 4:53.71s to add a bronze medal to his 5th place in the 800m.

2013 Ulster Schools Athletics

Annalee AC athletes continue to perform strongly at the prestigious Ulster Schools Track & Field Championships. The athletes had previously competed for their schools (Loreto Cavan and St Pats College Cavan) at the E District in the Antrim Forum to earn qualification to the finals. In a strong showing, all of the Cavan–based Annalee athletes who qualified won medals in the championship finals, competing in the full spectrum of events ranging from sprint hurdles to steeplechase to throws and jumps.

Well done to all the Annalee athletes who competed in the All Ireland Schools on Saturday June 1st. Special mention to Turlough Gray who won a silver medal in the Senior Boys Walk.

There were numerous individual and relay medals in the Ulster Childrens' Games and U12-U13 T&F Championships on Sunday June 2nd in Finn Valley with Conall Mooney the latest Annalee AC Ulster Champion following his win the 60m. Report to follow later.
