2013 Co Cavan Track & Field Championships

Senior Track & Field Championships and Childrens’ Games incorporating the U12 and U13 Track & Field Championships May 12th 2013

and

U14-U18 Co Cavan Track & Field Championships and Masters Track & Field Championships May 6th 2013

Annalee AC’s Cian O’Reilly completed a clean sweep of the Co Cavan Senior Mens Championship titles over the 2012-2013 season. Cian won both the Senior Men’s 1500m and 3000m races at the 2013 County Cavan track & field championships to add to the Senior Men’s 10k Cross Country Championship title he won in December and the 10k Road Race in March 2103. And there were first time senior county championship titles for Lauren Sexton in the 100m hurdles and Aoife Murphy in the ladies High Jump. This was the first year Aoife and Lauren were eligible to compete as senior athletes at county level and both completed their technical events without difficulty despite the wet and cold conditions.  Both of these athletes have been dominant in their preferred events right through the juvenile years and they have now successfully progressed into the senior age groups.

Aodhagan O’Reilly took silver in both the 1500m and 3000m track events. Marathon runner Diana Hogan Murphy dropped down to the 1500m distance for the day and showed good form to finish with the bronze medal while Laura Young was close behind in 4th place.

Annalee AC’s Gayle Anderson retained her Senior sprint title with a well judged race. Gayle had to work hard to win the 100m with inches separating the first 3 athletes. The 400m race was another hard battle with Gayle Anderson again in the medals as she finished in third place while Laura Young and Diana Hogan Murphy just missed out on medal spots. Eimear Nulty continues to rehab well from a serious knee injury and she won bronze medals in both the discus and the shot putt. The ladies medley relay of Gayle-200m, Aoife-200m, Laura 400m and Diana-800m, then finished in second place winning silver county championship medals for all involved.

Liam Canning was another Annalee athlete making his debut in the senior category and showed his sprinting talent with a bronze in the 100m and a silver medal in the 400m. Darren Watters was the bronze medal winner in the 400m and Ferdia Donohoe and Tadhg McGahern both had top 5 finishes in the 400m race. Tadhg then went on to the long jump where he finished in third place in his first senior athletics championships. The Annalee AC medley relay team of Ferdia-200m, Liam 200m, Darren 400m and Cian-800m won silver in an exciting race. Three further Annalee athletes Paul-200m, Tadhg-400m and Aodhagan 800m combined with Matthew O’Reilly from Shercock to pull off a surprise third place.

There were lots of medals won by the younger Annalee athletes in the U9-U13 Track & Field competition. With the Ulster Childrens Games taking place in Donegal in just a few weeks in on June 2nd, the athletes were keen to put in good performances in their disciplines. In the field events, gold medals were won by Kate McManus in the U9 Turbo javelin and Beth Grant was a medal winner in the u9 sprint while Luke Gilmartin and Conall Mooney won multiple gold and silver medals in their events.

Odhran O’Reilly, Donncha McNamara and Donal McSorley were very impressive in the U10 Boys age group. They had a clean sweep of the medals with a 1,2,3 finish in the 500m while Odhran won a second individual gold medal in the Long Jump and Donncha was second. Donal medalled in the 60m sprint. In the girls competitions, Ellie McManus won another gold in the U10 turbo javelin while Maeve Young was a silver medal winner in the U10 60m sprint.

The U11 Girls category has proved to be very competitive with a number of very strong athletes in the county. Niamh McCorry and Emily Sheridan both performed very well. Niamh had an excellent 60m race and she was ahead for the first 50m but was just overhauled and had to be content with second place  on the day. Emily Sheridan finished one spot behind with another strong performance. The two also finished in second and third place in the long jump competitions with their clubmates Lucy Jayne Grant and Kate Donohoe also showing good form. The U11 Boys had equally impressive results with James Fahy winning silver in the 60m. Dallan McKenna was a multiple medal winner and Mark Sexton was a close 4th in the sprint. Ryan McGoldrick won bronze in the turbo javelin.

Annalee AC’S U12 Girls also did very well. Bevan McCaffrey had a great day winning the 60m and the High Jump and finishing second in the long jump. Mary Kate Gannon won the long jump and was a close second in the 60m sprint and tool another second place in her third event of the day, the 800m. Blathnaid O’Reilly threw a pb of 6.37m in the shot putt, good enough for the silver medal. Blathnaid finished 4th in the 800m and was just out of the medals in the turbo javelin. Roisin Kellegher finished in second place in the U12 High Jump.

Meanwhile, the U12 Boys were very strong in the 800m. Conor Galligan won gold, Jamie Dugdale Silver and Conall Ruddy was 4th in the middle distance race. Jamie and Connor were second and third in the long jump. Daire Donohoe won bronze in the 60m. Aaron Curry had some excellent runs for his first county competition. Cliodhna Sheridan was third in the U13 Girls high jump and 5th in the 60m. Daire O’Reilly returned to the track after an injury and was 3rd in the U13 800m race and was 4th in both the high jump and in the javelin.
