All Ireland Junior Indoor Track & Field Championships, AIT Arena, Athlone February  10th 2013.

Andrew Creamer, Annalee AC may have recorded his second record in two weeks when he was just 3/100ths of a second outside the NationaL Junior Record for the Junior Men’s Indoor 60m hurdle championship race in Athlone on February 10th 2013. Andrew ran a time of 8.05s and was a comfortable winner of yet another All Ireland title. However, the previous mark was set over a different height hurdle. The Irish Hurdlers Association have now queried the AAI Technical Committee and have asked them to confirm if Andrew’s time is a new Junior record. Full article here  This latest possible record follows on from Andrew’s new Senior Men’s County Cavan record for the 60m Indoor Hurdles which he set in the AAI Games in Athlone this year. Annalee AC had two finalists in the Junior Men’s 60m Hurdles as Denis Frimpong also qualified. Denis ran 8.82s in the final and finished in 6th place. There were numerous medals won by Annalee athletes and three Ulster championship titles for John Nulty, Roland Surlis and Clodagh O’Reilly as Day 1 of the 2013 Ulster &NI Indoor Track & Field Championships took place in the Meadowbank Arena. A change in format this year meant that all the events excluding the 60m sprints and the 60m hurdles were held on Day 1. The club had fewer athletes competing in the field events this year this year but those that travelled performed well and there were some excellent results across the age groups.

In the jumps, John Nulty retained his Ulster long jump  title with a 5.97m jump which is a personal best for John and was nearly half a metre ahead of second place. Eoghan McCormack finished 8th in the same age group. Sean Og Lawlor showed good form as he continues his return form injury. He jumped 4.82m to finish 3rd in the U16  Boys long jump. Cian Brady missed out on a medals by just 2cms as he jumped an excellent 4:05m to finish 4th. Patrick Gaffney jumped well in his first Ulster competition. In the U14 Boys LJ. Conor Galligan and Eoghan Ruddy were 8th and 11th respectively in the U12 LJ. Mary Kate Gannon was 5th with 3.62m in the U12 Girls Long Jump while Ellen Brady placed 9th in the U16 Girls event.

Meanwhile on the track.  Roland Surlis ran a pb to win the U17 Boys 800m in 2.17.29s.  Diarmuid McCorry had a brilliant race in the U16 Boys 800m and was holding third place until the very last stride, eventually missing out of a medal by a mere one fifth of a second. Clodagh O’Reilly won the  U17 1500m race despite having already raced in the 800m earlier in the day. Clodagh held the lead in the 1500m for most of the race until she was overtaken in the back straight by the U19 athlete from Derry. But Clodagh sprinted by her in the finishing straight to take the gold medal in 4:50.81s. Her time in the 800m was 2.24.25s. and this was another close race with Clodagh losing out on the run in to take second.
