Four of Annalee AC’s young athletes travelled to the superb Lee Valley Athletics Arena in South London for the Metaswitch Indoor Open Games  on Sunday, 6th January 2013. The Cavan athletes showed they were more than equal to their British equivalents and returned home with two gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze medal.

A tough task was in hand for All Ireland Champion and national indoor championship best record holder Andrew Creamer as the races were graded in accordance with the individual personal best times. Andrew was in a race against some of the UK’s best U20 hurdlers. Andrew ran an excellent time of 8:16s, which is outstanding for his first serious run of the year and finished in a very close 3rd place. Paul Sexton, another 2012 All Ireland Champion was also in sparkling form and he raced clear of the other competitors in his U17 category race to win in a very good 8:9s.

Aine Brady didn’t run in the hurdles as she sustained a minor muscle strain during the warm up but this only spurred Aine on for the 400m where she had a fantastic race, showing good strength and resolve to come second in a time of 63s. Finally, Darren Watters was the last of the Annalee athletes to compete but he continued the pattern of medal winning performances as he came through strongly in the second lap of the U20 400m to win another gold medal. Annalee AC Coach Aiden Watters travelled with the group to the London venue and was very pleased with the early season showing of all four of the athletes.
