Annalee Athletes Make National Headlines

Annalee athletes are making their mark nationally at Athletic Meetings across the country.

Niamh McCorry represented Annalee Athletics Club in The National Combined Events Championships 2017 on Saturday May 27th in Santry .  In the Combined Events athletes participate in a number of track and field events earning points for their performance in each event which adds to a total points score. Niamh , an all rounder, is well equipped for this event and she needed all her steel and determination to get through on a truly miserable day weather wise as competition was held up for over two hours. The High Jump, a strong event for Niamh, had to be cancelled due to the inclement conditions leaving hurdles, long jump, shot putt and 800m.Niamh ran the fastest time in the hurdles at 12.72 secs, a PB of 9.52m in shot putt and going into the 800m she was sitting in 3rd position with  only 60 points separating  1st and 4th position. Niamh won the 800m  in a time of 2.28.18 min shifting her into 2nd position, a mere 4 points behind the winner.

More recently four Annalee athletes took  part in The All Ireland Schools Championships on Saturday 3rd June in Tullamore. They all acquitted themselves very well. First up was Roisín Kellegher , an extremely talented high jumper showing great promise . Roisín jumped 1.55m in the junior girls’ high jump, winning a bronze medal amidst stiff competition.

Next up  Oisín McCorry  brother of Niamh,, ran the senior boys’ race coming  in 5th place. In the junior girls’ another very talented hurdler with terrific style, Bevan McCaffrey, won a silver and Niamh McCorry who still had some steam left  came home in 4th position. Great achievements for Annalee A.C.!

Annalee AC  Athletes at Antrim  Forum

Annalee Athletics Club had a very successful day recently at The Antrim Forum in The Youth Development League.  This league is a series of Track and Field competitions which encourages young athletes to compete against other clubs in their region. Ample opportunity is available to athletes as it is possible to compete in either ‘A’ or ‘B’ category of each event from U13 to U17 age groups. Points are awarded for placings in both categories. This event offers  athletes a wonderful opportunity to develop and perfect their technique. This year the competition is spread over three days. Results of the winning club will be announced after Day 3 , which will be on July 1st.

Childrens’ Games U12 and U13 and Masters T&F

This successful team brought home a team gold medal for Annalee which was a proud achievement indeed and contributed a total of 65 points to their club.

In the U9 age group Aisha Gannon earned herself a bronze medal.

Annalee also won team gold in the Boys U11 age group with 57 points. This team’s overall success contributed in no small way to the Cavan Club coming third in Ulster in this event. Cormac Crotty continued to impress, winning a bronze, followed closely by teammate, Fionn Mc Namara, in fourth place. Charlie Gannon, Tadhg Shiels, Rory O’Brien and Cian Mc Crystal all ran impressive races to help Annalee to overall third place.

In the U13 Boys event Donnacha Mc Namara did his team proud winning an individual bronze medal. James Miney was not far behind finishing in 8th place. The other team members: Luke Gilmartin, Malachy O’Brien and Odhrán O’Reilly all ran their best putting Annalee into 2nd position overall with 53 points.

The Moore twins ran their hearts out in the U13 Girls’ event with Charlotte winning silver and Olivia coming in 11th place out of a huge field of 98 runners, taking an individual medal for her position. Renee Crotty and Katie Gannon followed her closely, coming in 15th and 26th positions, respectively. This pushed the girls into bronze medal position with a phenomenal total of 115 points.

2015 Ulster & NI Cross Country Championships, Uneven Ages, Finn Valley

Day 2 of the Ulster Championships was held in windy wet weather in Finn Valley, Donegal and there was plenty of traditional cross country mud to challenge the athletes. However, there was a great start to the championships in Finn Valley when Annalee runners won both of the U9 races.  Fionn McNamara won the Boys U9 race with Tadhg Sheils finished close behind in second place while Cait O’Reilly was the clear winner of the U9 Girls race. There was more good news for Annalee when Renee Crotty won a further individual silver medal when she came second in the U11 Girls. The top three girls battled for the podium positions throughput the race with Renee doing enough to edge second place in an excellent run.

Annalee AC’s Luke Gilmartin (5th) and Conall Mooney (8th) were the first two runners home for Annalee in the U11 Boys. The remaining members of Cormac Crotty, Oliver McCrystal, Senan Sheils, Oisin Browne and Rory O’Brien all packed in well and the team ran away with the Ulster Championship title and team gold medals. These boys helped the County Cavan team to second place in the U11 category. The U13 Girl’s team also secured a podium finish when they won the bronze club medal. Lucy Hogan won an individual top 12 medal and she was followed closely by Kate McCrystal with Emily Sheridan, Mariann McDonnell, Lucy Jayne Grant all running brilliantly to deservedly win to the team bronze medal and all Ireland qualification.

And there were top 12 medals and All Ireland qualification for Caoimhe O’Reilly  (11th) and Hannah McHugh (12th) in the U19 girls

Annalee AC athletes Donncha McNamara and Donal McSorley were the first two boys home in the U12 Race in second and third place respectively. These medal winning performances ensured that the remaining Annalee AC team of Luke Gilmartin, Odhran O’Reilly, Conall Mooney, Oliver McCrystal and Malachy O’Brien were well placed in the team competition and the boys duly won the silver medal in second place. Annalee was just beaten to the gold team medal by a very strong Cranford team. Well done to all the Annalee athletes who competed in the final of the YDL in Belfast on Sunday. Annalee AC finished in 5th place, a very good result for our first year in the league.

2014 Co Cavan Even Age & Masters Cross Country

Annalee AC athletes enjoyed their first event of the 2014 cross country season with team wins in twelve of the sixteen races as well as winning eight individual championship titles.

Lilah Dolan was the first Annalee winner of the day. Lilah led from the start in the 3k race with a strong run ensuring that she retained her V3 Masters Championship title. Paul Connolly finished 3rd in the V3 Men’s 5k race and led home the gold medal winning team with Mark McNamara and Peadar McKiernan in 4th and 6th places respectively. The V3 Ladies also won with Fiona Connolly and Evelyn O’Reilly the two other scoring runners in 4th and 5th.  The V1 men packed well with Elvin O’Brien 2nd, Paddy Devine 3rd and Brendan Jennings 4th place finishes ensuring they also took team gold. The V1 Ladies was second in the team stakes and Fionnuala Gilmartin was the top finisher in 4th spot.

There was no stopping Conall Mooney and Luke Gilmartin as they finished in first and second places in the U10 Boys 600m race while Cormac Crotty and Senan Sheils were close behind in 4th and 5th place. Ella Kenny, Renee Crotty, Ellie Brady and Aoibheann Clarke finished close together in  2nd, 3rd , 4th and 5th in the U10 girls. Both U10 Girls and Boys won team golds.

Donncha McNamara and Odhran O’Reilly have been performing very strongly in the cross country races over the past few years and they ran very well again this year with Donnacha winning the U12 Boys 1200m Championship and Odhran coming second. Alex Prior and Callum Kelly were the next runners in for Annalee in 5th and 9th place and this was good enough to win the team competition. Lucy Hogan was impressive as she was a runaway winner of the U12 Girls County Championship title. Emily Sheridan, Kate Donohoe and Maeve Young finished 6th, 9th and 10th and the U12 Girls team finished in second spot. Mary Kate Gannon ran well to finish in 6th place in a tough U14 Girls 2k race. The other scoring U14 girls team runners were Blathnaid O’Reilly in 8th, Cliodhna Sheridan in 11th and Alana O’Brien in 12th and that was also good enough for second place in a tight competition.

The Annalee U14 Boys won their team category. Daire O’Reilly was 3rd with Conall Ruddy in 5th, Chavez Moore running very well in his first county race finished 6th and Adam Kelly was 11th to ensure a further team gold. Then there was a clean sweep of the medals for Annalee athletes in the U16 Boys category. Ciaran O’Reilly easily won the U16 Boys 3000m race. Cian Brady was second and Cormac Donohoe was 3rd while Enda Langty and Oisin McBreen were 4th and 5th respectively. Unfortunately, Annalee had no team in the U16 Girls with Abbie Sexton and Veronika Failer the only two club runners and this was the only age category in which no team medal was won by the club..

There were further clean sweeps of the top positions in the U18 and Junior Girls 4k and in the Junior Boys 5k. Clodagh O’Reilly, Caoimhe O’Reilly, Hannah McHugh and Jamie Gannon were the top 4 in the girl’s race while Louis Courtney, Aodhagan Watters, Eoghan McCormack and Wesley Moore took the top four spots in the Junior Boys. Annalee teams won all for U18 and Junior team competitions.

The overall cross country county title is awarded each year to the club with the most points from all 3 days of cross country competition. Annalee AC have taken a strong lead after the first day with a score of 122 points which is 68 points ahead of the second placed club.

Daire O’Reilly won a bronze medal in the U14 Shot putt and Cliodhna Sheridan was very unlucky to miss out on a medal as she recorded a pb in the high jump to finish 4th.

The Northern Ireland & Ulster Children’s Games & U12-U13 Championships proved to be a fantastic day for Annalee club athletes and teams with 15 individual medals, 9 relay medals and total of 13 Annalee teams have qualified for the All Ireland Childrens Games

In the U9 category, Ellie Brady won two individual gold medals in her events, the U9 60m and U9 Long Jump. In the team events, Ellie and Isobel Sheridan qualified for All Irelands in both long jump and sprint as they finished in 1st place in the long jump and 3rd place overall in the sprint. Grace Devine won a silver medal in the U9 Turbo javelin and also finished in second place in the team category along with Rose Jennings.

Annalee’s Cormac Crotty took individual bronze medals in the U9 300m and in the U9 60m. Cormac teamed up with Mark Fahy to get second place in the long jump team event and then combined with Dylan Edwards to get second team in the 300m. Dylan Edwards and Rory O’Brien also qualified for the All Irelands as they took the second team spot in the U9 Turbo Javelin. Annalee U9 Boys had two relay teams and they won Gold and Bronze medals.

The U10 category was very competitive with large numbers taking part. There were 39 runners and 17 teams in the U10 Boys 60m. Conall Mooney ran very well to finish in second place with a silver medal. Conall and Leo Jennings combined as a team in this event and they finished in third place. The U10 Boys ‘A’ relay team won silver in their race with the ‘B’ team finishing in 7th place. There were 40 runners in the girls U10 60m race and Annalee’s Renee Crotty and Ella Brady did exceptionally well to finish in 3rd and 4th place respectively. The girls took first place in the 60m team event. Aoibhinn Clarke and Beth Grant also qualified in the 500m team event where they finished in 3rd place. The U10 Girls relay team had a great run winning silver medals in second place.

Annalee AC’s Odhran O’Reilly also won Gold in the U11 Boys 60m sprint with Donal McSorley just behind in the silver medal position. The two boys easily won the first place team competition as their combined time was over a second faster than the second placed team. Odhran O’Reilly went on to finish in second place in the 500m with Donncha McNamara winning bronze in third place. Odhran and Donncha were just pipped for first place by a very strong Cranford team who finished just 0.2 seconds faster than the Annalee boys.  Donal McSorley then won an individual bronze medal in the long jump. Donal and Donncha combined in this event to get second team overall. The U11 Boys Turbo Javelin team also qualified with Ethan Edwards finishing in 4th place overall and teaming up with David Mooney to win the 3rd team spot. Annalee’s 4 X100m relay team won gold in 1:02.9s to round off an excellent days competition for the U11 Boys. There were no U11 Girls from Annalee competing in the Ulster Championships.

Competition is very tough at Ulster level in the U12 and U13 Track & Field Championships and this year was no different with very large entry fields in these age groups. There were some very good runs in both sprints and middle distance heats with Annalee athletes either winning their heats or finishing in the top three spots. Medals are always hard to come by though and fractions of a second separated some of the Annalee athletes from medals. Niamh McCorry was one of the individual medal winners as she finished second in the U12 Turbo Javelin with a throw of 14.88m. Roisin Kellegher jumped 1.20m to win the bronze medal in the U12 high jump. Jamie Dugdale won a silver medal in the U13 60m Hurdles. Bevan McCaffrey and Conall Ruddy both qualified for the All Ireland Track & Field Championships with 4th place finishes in the U13 sprint hurdles. Daire Donohoe also qualified with 4th places in both the U13 80m and in the long jump. Ben Monahan was another 4th place finisher with a throw of 6.88m in the U13 Shot Putt. The Relay teams put a real gloss on the day as further excellent performances from Annalee teams resulted in the U12 Girls and U13 Boys winning silver medals while the U13 Girls and U12 Boys won bronze medals. Annalee teams medalled in the 8 of the 9 relay races the club contested.

In the U16-U17 Age group chmapiosnhips held in the Antrim Forum, Aine Brady showed her outstanding talent in hurdles as she won gold medals in both the 100m Hurdles and in the longer 300m Hurdles events. Caoimhe O’Reilly won a bronze medal in the 200m Steeplechase. Caoimhe O’Reilly wins bronze in the 2000m steeplechase. Diarmuid McCorry was 5th in the U16 Boys 400m.

Good luck to all these Annalee athletes as they move on to represent their club, county and province in the All Ireland Track & Field Championships.

Clodagh breaks 32 year old championship record as Annalee athletes star in Ulster Schools T&F Championships on Friday and Saturday.

At the first major track event of 2014, the Ulster Secondary Schools Championships, Clodagh O'Reilly, Loreto College, Cavan, took the titles in both the Intermediate Girls 3000m and 1500m in fine style. The 3000m was held on Friday evening and in beautiful summer conditions Clodagh smashed the long standing record when she won the race in a time of 10:10 minutes, taking 8 seconds of the previous record set in 1982 by Donegal athlete Teresa Reynolds. Clodagh lead from the gun and finished 30 seconds clear of her nearest rival. Continuing in her winning form, Clodagh took to the track again on Saturday for the 1500m and made it the double by coming home a clear winner.

Earlier in the day St. Patrick's College athletes, Andrew Creamer and Paul Sexton were in fine form, coming home 1st and 2nd respectively in the Boy's Senior 110m Hurdles. Paul's sister Abbey Sexton, Loreto College, kept up the family tradition when she came first in the Junior Girl's 80m Hurdles. Abbey gave a stunning performance and was a worthy winner. Another Cavan hurdler Aine Brady, Loreto College, took on the difficult task of both the Intermediate Girl's 100m and 300m Hurdles. Aine took the Silver in the 300m Hurdles and Bronze in the 100m Hurdles.

Next up was St. Patrick's College athlete, Aodhagan Watters competing in the 2000m Steeplechase. Aodhagan ran the strong race battling all the way to the line, just missing out on second position, to take the bronze medal. Roland Surlis, St Patrick’s College, was in action in the Senior Boys 800m and this race was a real battle all the way with the lead changing on numerous occasions finishing up with three evenly matched athletes coming into the final straight. Unfortunately Roland collided with another athlete on the bend and this disrupted his stride which allowed the other two athletes to get away. Roland can home a strong third which qualifies him for the All Irelands. Caoimhe OReilly showed good hurdling technique in the steeplechase where she finished in 4th place.

Meanwhile in the field events Ciaran Schutten, St Patricks College, competed in the javelin where he took the bronze medal. John Nulty, St Patricks College was unlucky not to hit top form and finished in fourth position in the Senior boys Long jump. Courtney Rappel-McDowell, Loreto College, competed in the Senior girls javelin finishing fifth in a very strong competition. Evan Borke, St Patricks College, finished sixth in the Senior boys 200m.

Andrew, Paul, Abby, Aine, Roland, Aodhagan, Ciaran and Clodagh will now go on to compete in the All Irelands Secondary Schools Championships to be held in Tullamore on May 31st.

Co Cavan U14-18 and MastersT&F Championships

There were a few outstanding performances at yesterdays county championships. Paul Connolly won gold in all his events-the V3 Mens 100m, Long Jump with a new pb, and the 3000m along with team gold in the Masters 4 x100m relay. Mark McNamara wasn’t too far behind with two individual golds in the V1 Shot putt and 100m along with a bronze in the 3000m and team relay gold. Paul Fahy also had an excellent pb in the long jump and finished in 2nd position in both the long jump and in the 100m. Brendan Jennings was second in the V1 100m and in the V1 Long jump. Alvin O’Brien shrugged off the effects of a mere ! 120km cycle the day before the race and had a very strong 3000m race where he finished in the silver position. Lorraine O’Reilly continued the medal haul wth gold in the V1 100m and a brilliant last leg in the ladies relay to bring her team back up into silver place after a mishap at the first bato exchange. Lyla Dolan won the V3 1500m and Aiden Watters won the V3 Shot putt. Monika O’Brien had a spectacular debut in the long jump championships winning the V1 event. Evelyn O’Reilly won silver in the shot and 100m with a bronze in the long jump. Brenda Wilson won bronze in both the 100m and 1500m. There were good efforts from Fiona Connolly, Tara McNamara and Miriam Griffin but they finished just outside the medals on the day. The men’s relay team won their race while the ladies two teams finished in second and 4th place. At the end of the events, the Kiernan Perpetual Cup for best overall Masters Track & Field championship performance  was awarded jointly to Annalee AC and to Shercock. Results Link
